The fighting sparked mass evacuations of thousands of foreign nationals in the initial weeks, while many abandoned foreign diplomatic facilities were ransacked.
KHARTOUM - Fighting flared again in Sudan on Tuesday despite the latest ceasefire pledges of the two warring generals, meant to allow desperately needed aid to reach besieged civilians.
On Tuesday, air raids and fighting continued late into the night in Khartoum and Darfur, residents told AFP. The RSF said they will "exercise their right to defend themselves" and accused the army of violating the truce. Sudan was already poverty-stricken before the war, with a third of its 45 million people relying on aid.
Entire districts of Khartoum no longer have running water, electricity is only available for a few hours a week, and three quarters of hospitals in combat zones are out of service. What few health facilities still operate have practically run out of medicines and equipment and must purchase fuel at up to 20 times its pre-war price to keep generators running.

Sudan's Warring Parties Extend Fragile TruceSudan's military and the rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have agreed to extend a fragile 7-day ceasefire agreement for five extra days, as mediators Saudi Arabia and the U.S. maintain hope that it could lead to a longer-term truce. The week-long ceasefire, which barely held amid reports of ongoing fighting, was extended shortly before it was set to expire. Mediators argue the truce helped with humanitarian assistance. A day earlier, mediators from the two countries accused both the army, under the leadership of General Abdel Fattah Burhan and Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo's RSF of "posturing for further escalation." Meanwhile, also on Monday, May 29, 2023 the United Nations' World Food Program announced that in a "major breakthrough", it is starting to reach thousands of residents trapped in their homes in capital city Khartoum. Over a million people have been displaced and hundreds killed since fighting began in April, 2023. Hundreds of thousands of people have crossed into neighbouring countries to seek refuge.
