Director Mark Mylod, who helmed Succession's penultimate episode, reveals what it took to create Logan Roy’s V.I.P. funeral.

” of a marriage to Tom ; and Roman’s slow quest toward competence. He points out that, though the characters have not changed, the way they are depicted has.

“At the end of season one and into season two, we started finding story opportunities to [explore] their vulnerabilities,” Mylod says. “It was great fun in the first season for me to laugh and point at how incredibly unsympathetic these characters were. One of the things I loved most about the first season was how bold [creator]] writing was in in not giving a damn if you give two hoots about any of these people.

Though the characters’ natures do not change, their positions of power are in flux from episode to episode. “A great pilot has the character do a 180-degree arc from where they started,” Mylod says. “And here we have that in the 38th episode. [We have as] big of a character swing as any single episode that we’ve done in terms of where the episode starts and where the episode finishes.”

“We have a beautiful kind of crossover, of Kieran’s character starting so high on the hog with the president’s pecker in his pocket to the broken nihilism in the aftermath of a street protest,” the filmmaker says. “He’s utterly broken by emotion, which is extraordinary in itself.
