Nicola Sturgeon’s brutal row with Alex Salmond was beginning of the end for their shared dream of independence 🔎 Big Read by HugoGye
Nicola Sturgeon is as political as it comes, and her unparalleled electoral successes in recent years are testament to her decades of experience in the Scottish nationalist movement.
She stepped up to a leadership position for the first time in 2004, when she was running mate to her mentor Alex Salmond as he returned to his former position as SNP leader with Ms Sturgeon – who had toyed with her own bid for the top job – as his deputy.
Her star continued to rise, not just in Scotland but across the UK, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic when her daily press conferences were seen as reassuring and she promised to keep following an evidence-based policy while Mr Johnson radiated chaos. Scotland saw a spike in drug-related deaths and a ballooning deficit. The education gap between pupils from the richest and poorest families, which the First Minister said was her “defining mission”, did not shrink, and the performance of the NHS nosedived in Scotland just as it did elsewhere in the UK.
There were mounting questions over what Ms Sturgeon herself knew about the case; whether she had been open about the way she was told of the allegations before they became public; and whether she and her team had deliberately pursued the accusations as part of a political vendetta against her former mentor. For her part, she accused Mr Salmond of a vendetta against her, a remarkable turnaround from the days when they were as close as political allies can be.
