Researchers say that to an extent the milder infections are probably due to high population immunity
An SA study suggests there is less risk of hospital admission and severe illness in people infected with the Omicron coronavirus variant than with Delta variant, though the authors say that is probably due to an extent to high population immunity.
The analysis was carried out by a group of scientists from the National Institute for Communicable Diseases and major universities including University of the Witwatersrand and University of KwaZulu-Natal. However, they included several caveats and cautioned against jumping to conclusions about the intrinsic characteristics of Omicron.
But Hunter said its main weakness was that it compared Omicron data from one period with Delta data from an earlier period.
