Columbus City Schools has 556 active bus drivers for roughly 614 routes as of Sept. 2. The district averages about 18% or 100 driver call-offs daily.

The district's transportation call center has 10 staff members and averages about 3,000 calls a day, with an average wait time of 1:25 hours, she said. Her 11-year-old son Max Stump, who attends Johnson Park Middle School, told his mom they were kicked off the bus at 3:17 p.m. because the students were being rowdy. He gets out of school at 2:30 p.m. and he is supposed to get dropped off at his bus stop at 2:58 p.m.

“I was driving around aimlessly just trying to find him off based of what he was describing,” she said. “At no time were students forced/kicked off a bus mid-route by a bus driver, nor has it ever happened,” Bryant said.Bus drivers are not allowed to kick students off the bus mid-route, but Simmons said it does happen sometimes.
