Katie Gregson-MacLeod, 21, told i of her 'whirlwind year' after getting a Best Song nomination at the Ivors for Complex
for a prestigious songwriting award at the Ivors after the break-up track she posted on TikTok became a viral sensation.Gregson-MacLeod, who studied History at Edinburgh University, has amassed 30 million streams for the song, which she posted onThe 45-second demo of the track, inspired by an ex who failed to reciprocate the singer’s feelings, became an overnight viral hit.
Within days, it had racked up seven million TikTok views and its melancholy lyrics prompted cover versions from stars including Camila Cabello, Madison Beer and Tom Walker.She struck a deal with Columbia Records, home to Adele, Styles and Bob Dylan, and was whisked off to Los Angeles to work with Greg Kurstin, the Grammy-award-winning songwriter behind Adele’s biggest hits., Styles’s chart-topper which was the biggest-selling single of last year., Tom Odell and dance collective Sault.
“It’s such an honour to be recognised by the Ivors. I was obsessed with songwriting growing up and I always hoped then I’d make it to the Novello awards.”was literally an overnight success. I wrote the song, put the chorus up on TikTok and when I woke up the next morning all hell was breaking loose. It was a surreal few days.
“I’ve gone from playing guitar in my bedroom to working in these great studios in Los Angeles and playing with a twelve-piece string section.”She still hopes to complete the history degree she abandoned in her third year when pop fame came calling: “I’ve deferred my place.
