Campus police at the Fort Valley, Ga., school responded to a single gunshot fired shortly before 7 p.m. at a residence hall.
A cause for the shooting remains unknown, as police are trying to determine whether the student was shot by a suspect or the shooting was self-inflicted, according to the Peach County Sheriff’s Office.
Fort Valley State University ended the lockdown shortly after 10 p.m., but more security officers remained prevalent on campus.
