Shannon Fleming had not long signed up to take part in a safety campaign focussed on educating other students about the dangers of spiking
Edge Hill University student Shannon Fleming was on a night out in Ormskirk when the terrifying incident happened. The 20 year-old, who is in her final year at the university, ended up in hospital for treatment.
The move is part of Lancashire Police’s work to prevent violence against women and girls and aims to provide information and guidance on where students can go for help and support. Marketing students designed posters providing information on the symptoms of spiking, encouraging people to take care of themselves and their friends.
She said: "With the video I found it was quite helpful. Anyone can go out and not notice when they're not looking at a drink." John Donachie-Ashcroft, 20, also worked on the video. He also has personal experience in spiking, and feels the issue has worsened in recent years. He said: "My mum was spiked in a club. It's not necessarily something new, but it's really elevated in numbers in the past few years, especially since I started university."
