Universities in the Western Cape brace for an influx of students as the Private Student Housing Association calls for urgent payment from NSFAS to address accommodation challenges.

Picture: Ayanda Ndamane/Independent Newspapers Cape Town - It is the calm before the storm as universities across the Western Cape prepare for the intake of thousands of hopeful students, while the glaring reality of the Private Student Housing Association waits on the National Students Financial Aid Scheme to make payment for accommodation for new and past residency.
The facility has a gym, laundry area, swimming pools, studying areas and keyless access to rooms including high-tech security and more amenities. She indicated the university had increased its total number of beds over the past few years from 13 200 in 2023 to 15 000 in 2024, and today it offers 16 200 beds.
Stellenbosch University spokesperson, Martin Viljoen, said they received a total of 90 400 undergraduate applicants, which translates to approximately 225 700 programme applications received.“SU's enrolment targets as agreed with the Department of Higher Education and Training, make provision for the admission of 6 005 first-time entry first-year undergraduate students.
