There have been big changes in the street
New student flats are planned in a Nottingham city centre street which has experienced a number of changes in recent years. Following the demise of the Broadmarsh centre, a series of shop closures have followed in Lister Gate, including Marks and Spencer Home store, Pret, Boots and WHSmith.
Plans have been proposed to Nottingham City Council for three new student flats on the upper floors of two retail units on 19 - 23 Lister Gate. The flats would be on the first, second and third floor above the Tiger Community Hub and Leeds Building Society. In total there will be 15 new bedrooms, five in each of the three student flats.
Ann Gillies, 81, spoke about how Lister Gate has changed with the loss of shops and how the addition of students might help the area. Ann, who's lived in Nottingham her whole life said: “I’m struggling to shop today, with shops there are limited numbers, if they keep the retail units at the bottom. I think they mustn't change too much otherwise people won’t shop. I think Nottingham is a very sad place to shop compared to back in my day.
