Healthcare professionals had obtained a special warrant to allow them to take Brendan McFarlane to a mental health unit

A mum cried as she heard how her 20-year-old son was found dead at a secure mental health unit where he had been taken for his own safety.

Police, paramedics and mental health professionals visited Bren's home, in Gladstone Heights, at 2.30pm on October 24 last year. Bren was admitted to The Harbour in Blackpool; a 154 bed mental health hospital, which provides care and treatment for adults who cannot be safely treated at home. Brain stem death happens when the brain stem no longer works. If the brain stem stops working, the person will never be able to be conscious or breathe without a ventilator. A person is confirmed as being dead when the brain stem stops working.

As well as becoming paranoid and isolated in the weeks before his death Bren had lost a significant amount of weight; around three stone, in a two to three-week period. He was often observed with a fixed stare and refused to open the door to his flat.
