OC Transpo general manager Renée Amilcar told council late Monday afternoon that wires were down between uOttawa and Lees stations. Alstom was sending more workers to Ottawa on Tuesday to repair the wires.
Amilcar said the repairs will take “several days to complete,” but Transpo hopes to make minor repairs on one set of tracks to get rail service going on another section of the railway. Transpo started Monday morning warning customers about a “technical issue” that closed the LRT system between Tunney’s Pasture and St. Laurent stations, requiring the R1 bus service.
According to Amilcar, Alstom said the failure affected the bearing and axle, but “it appears to have occurred in a different manner than the previous axle-bearing issue” that caused a train derailment in August 2021 near Tunney’s Pasture Station. According to Alstom’s root-cause analysis of the derailment, which was entered as evidence during the LRT inquiry, the company claims the design of the track, particularly in the curves, is contributing to excess loads placed on the train axles. It’s a phenomenon that the French train maker hasn’t seen with other Alstom products operating on similar systems around the world.
