Instead of merely being advised to clean up after themselves, first-time offenders will be given written warnings, NEA said on Tuesday. No one has been fined or charged since both agencies began efforts to dissuade table littering at hawker centres on Sept 1, 2021, and at coffee shops and foodcourts on Jan 1, 2022.
NEA said the strengthened enforcement measures are meant to reinforce good habits and deter the minority of diners who repeatedly fail to return their used trays and crockery. “NEA and SFA will continue to take a pragmatic approach, and will not take enforcement action against the less-abled, frail elderly and children, who are clearly unable to clear their tables.”
