Sundance, which recently pivoted to an online-only affair in the face of the COVID surge, runs Jan. 20-30. Berkeley filmmaker Sara Dosa, whose “Fire of Love” is among the documentary offerings, is delighted to see such high profile regional representation. “I feel so grateful for the opportunity and the honor of having a film at Sundance,” she said. “At the same time, I can’t deny the magic, the experience of seeing a film for the first time with a fresh audience.”
Davenport, who has since moved to Brooklyn and is working on a new documentary about doctor-assisted suicide and disabled people, credits the Netfilx hit “Crip Camp,” Sundance’s award-winning 2020 opening night selection, with moving the needle forward for documentaries. That film, directed by Berkeley’s Jim LeBrecht and Oakland’s Nicole Newnham, took audiences from a rowdy summer camp for the disabled in New York state to the birth of the disability rights movement in the East Bay.
Izzo’s feature is pegged to what might best be described as a journalistic “get,” his discovery of an audio tape revealing a shocking first-hand account of a humiliating and cruel experiences at a leadership conference, in which organizers preyed on participants’ fears and even placed some male attendees into coffins.
