Raymond Cook will be sentenced next month

A prison officer has been found guilty of perjury but a colleague has been cleared of the same allegation. The two former Strangeways officers allegedly gave false information during the inquest into the death of a man in custody, prosecutors claimed.

The coroner invited the jury to determine whether the restraint of Mr Ahmed in the segregation unit had been lawful and whether whilst in that unit, Mr Ahmed had sought to strike any of the officers who were dealing with him, jurors heard. Mr Ahmed’s death was considered by a pathologist to be the result of the combination of the physical and emotional effects of the restraint and an underlying heart condition, it was said.

Giving the defence closing speech for Mr Cook, Patrick Cassidy said his client had suffered a brain injury in 1988 which affected how he responds to events. He said his client initially described an arm going to ‘punch’ him, and he put his arms up in defence. “He would say he felt pressure by the right arm and took hold of it,” he added.

He added that the suggestion of ‘drug culture’ was not founded, as a toxicology report of Mr Ahmed’s body proved there were no illegal drugs in his system.
