Six youngsters were caught in a rip current at Strand Beach, with three being pulled from the water. Lifeguards responded quickly and successfully rescued all three children.

On Friday, 27 December 2024, lifeguards at Strand Beach rescued a 14-year-old boy and assisted two of his friends caught in a dangerous rip current . According to a media release, a group of six youngsters were wading in the surf zone outside the flags area when one was caught in a rip current and pulled away from the beach.

NSRI Beach Safety Camera operator Lezhae Snyders, monitoring the camera from the NSRI’s Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) at the time, spotted the youth in difficulty at 1pm and immediately alerted the CoCT Strand Lifeguards. Two CoCT Strand lifeguards, Caydon Neuman and Jubilee van Jaarsveld, responded with Torpedo Buoys and CoCT Strand lifeguard Sthembela Khawula with a rescue board. At 1:04 PM, just three minutes after the children had gotten into difficulty, lifeguards Caydon and Jubilee reached the stranded boys caught in the rip current. With the support of fellow lifeguard Sthembela, they quickly floated the victims to safety, preventing what could have been a tragic drowning incident involving all three children
