The full force of Storm Babet thrashes Scotland today with exceptional rainfall and gale force winds.
Eastern Scotland is bearing the brunt of the extreme rainfall and gale force winds in the second storm of the year. Met Office maps show a patchwork of overlapping warnings extending through the end of the day on Saturday.
Multiple amber warnings for rain and yellow warnings for wind cover much of Scotland today. On Thursday evening, Deputy First Minister Shona Robison said "the worst is yet to come". The Met Office has warned nearly nine inches of rain could fall in some regions. The Scottish Environment Protection Agency has issued 33 local flood warnings, with five areas under severe flood warnings.
With the red warning for rain, the Met Office warned of a danger to life from fast flowing or deep floodwater, extensive flooding, and that communities could be "completely cut off" perhaps for several days.
