Charities have warned politicians including Home Secretary Suella Braverman to stop referring to “swarms” of refugees and an “invasion” across the Channel in the wake of a violent protest in Merseyside

as politicians including Home Secretary Suella Braverman and her predecessor Priti Patel have used war-like language to refer to the crisis.

“With the high risk of more premeditated extremist attacks around the country, leaders of all parties must now take a clear stand and condemn any further violence against those who come here to find safety, and set out the action they will take to prevent it. “Leaders of all political parties must call for the ending of these hostile policies and hateful language that only fuels division and anger. This does not represent the people of Britain. This is not who we are.”

While the Home Secretary told Ms Salter she “shared a huge amount of concern”, she refused to apologise for her words. Fifteen people were arrested during the demonstration on Friday, including a teenager who appeared in court on Monday charged with violent disorder and assaulting an emergency services worker.

Superintendent Karl Baldwin from Knowsley Local Policing, said: “Since the order was introduced on Saturday, we have issued several dispersal notices to those looking to gather without good reason in this area. We will continue to use these powers to ensure that there is no repeat of the scenes witnessed on Friday.”
