U.S. stocks ended solidly higher on Wednesday as investors battered by tariff threats took solace in rising expectations for easier monetary policy from the Federal Reserve. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.82% rose 0.6% to end around 7,575. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.82% picked up 207 points, or 0.8%, to finish near 25,540. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.64% rose 0.6% to end around 7,575.
Fed Chairman Jerome Powell and other senior Fed officials have suggested the central bank could lower rates if trade tensions started to weigh on the economic outlook. Still, investors will keep a wary eye on trade discussions between Washington and Mexico City as representatives from both governments sit down together on Wednesday.
