They will be playing in the third tier next season for the first time in almost a decade and a half
Stockport County have been promoted for the second time in three seasons. A 2-0 against Morecambe was enough to secure their return to League 1 for the first time in 14 years.
The victory means that with three games to spare The Hatters, who last played in the third tier in 2010, can not be caught and will be one of the three teams automatically promoted. The Hatters, whose upturn in fortunes has coincided with their takeover by local businessman Mark Stott in 2020, returned to the Football League in 2022. And they narrowly missed out on back-to-back promotions after going down on penalties to Carlisle United after a 1-1 draw in the play-off final last May.
There were jubilant scenes at the final whistle. And council chiefs have already planned for street parties around the ground that are expected to go on long into the night.
