“I love y’all,” she said. “I’m terrible at good byes, but good bye, Toronto.”
She was dominant in her early 20s, winning seven Slams before she turned 24. Then came the relative lull, but she cranked it up again in her 30s, winning another 10 of them. That part is just nuts. The best players in the women’s game have historically won their titles in bunches, over a period lasting less than a decade. Steffi Graf won 20 of her 22 in a nine-season span. Martina Navratilova won 15 of her 18 in a seven-year stretch.
The attention on them from a young age hasn’t always been good. The sisters refused to play the Indian Wells tournament for years because of racist abuse the family suffered there early in their careers, and the Williamses were far from beloved as the sisters rose to prominence. She’s had some hot-tempered meltdowns, notably in the 2018 U.S. Open final, and has over the years been criticized for everything from her on-court behaviour to her outside interests to her fashion choices.
It was reminiscent of the way she was playing at the time: seemingly toying with her opponents before smashing dismissive aces down the court.
