Organisers of the 2021 Sanlam Cape Town Marathon have announced impressive men’s and women’s fields headlined by top South African runners Stephen Mokoka and Gerda Steyn.
The much-anticipated event, scheduled to take place on what is expected to be a relatively flat course on October 17, also boasts some of the best long distance runners on the continent.
Mokoka won the 2018 race in 2:08.31 to break the record of 2:08.41 that was set by Asefa Mengistu of Ethiopia in 2016 on the way to his first of two victories. For Steyn, who qualified for the Olympics after running 2:27.48 at the New York Marathon in 2019, the event has special meaning, as it will be the first time she lines up in a marathon in SA.
