Steven Downs sentenced for the murder and rape of Sophie Sergie in 1993.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Steven Downs was convicted and sentenced today at the Rabinowitz Courthouse for the murder and rape of Sophie Sergie in 1993.
Sergie was sexually assaulted and died from a bullet to the back of the head in a woman’s dormitory bathroom on April 25, 1993.“The sentence is flat. 67 years for Murder 1, 8 for Sexual Assault 1. Totaling consecutive for a combined composite sentence of 75 years of incarceration,” said Temple. Downs will serve both convictions consecutively and will receive credit for the time he has served, which today is 1,300 and 20 hours.
Judge Thomas ordered Downs to pay restitution to the family of Sophie Sergie and also noted Downs could be eligible for parole in 25 years.Copyright 2022 KTVF. All rights reserved.
