“The kid has carried this program for five years. He does everything and anything we ask. He’s a team player. He’s got a torn ligament. It’s pretty bad. I don’t know he does it.”

The Grade 12 guard hit a bank-shot three-pointer on Friday with 2.6 seconds remaining that gave his North Delta Huskies a 62-61 win over the Duchess Park Condors of Prince George that advanced his team to Saturday’s triple-A high school boys’ basketball final at Langley Events Centre.

“I respect these guys,” Gahir said after the traditional post-game hand shake. “I respect these guys because this isn’t even their first sport. They’re football players. They’re tough guys. And they can play. They were looking at becoming the first school to win both football and basketball crowns in the same school year since the 2011-12 Mission Roadrunners.

The game wasn’t a masterpiece. North Delta shot 27.3 per cent , Vernon shot 28.8 . It was intense and entertaining, and featured eight lead changes. The first two championship finals Saturday were lopsided, as the No. 2 Kelowna Christian Knights defeated the No. 4 Credo Christian Kodiaks 81-45 for the single-A crown, while the No. 1 Charles Hays Rainmakers downed the No. 7 George Eliot Coyotes 78-51 for the double-A crown.

Charles Hays, meanwhile, got 25 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks from Liam McChesney against George Eliot and the Grade 12 forward was later named that division’s MVP. The 6-9 McChesney has committed to Utah State for next year.
