Full-backs Reece James and Marc Cucurella were recalled by Blues coach Graham Potter, while Sebastien Haller started in the attack for Dortmund.
Dortmund went close with their first effort from a dead-ball situation, with goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga producing a good save to keep out Marco Reus' curling free-kick on 17 minutes. Chelsea had the ball in the back of the net through Havertz's impressive finish, but the celebrations were cut short due to Raheem Sterling being offside in the build-up.
The Blues were presented with a chance to double the lead seven minutes into the second half from the penalty spot but while Havertz missed with the first attempt, he was able to covert on the retake.
