Former Warrenpoint Town boss replaces Gary Hamilton who left earlier this month after 12 years in charge
Glenavon chairman Adrian Teer hailed the "in-depth knowledge of football on both sides of the border" of new manager Stephen McDonnell.
Under-20s manager Gary McAlister has been in charge for the last two games as Glenavon beat Carrick Rangers before losing out to Crusaders on Saturday. The Mourneview Park outfit said last week they had hoped to have a new man in the dugout for this Saturday's visit by reigning champions Larne. “We had a high degree of contact concerning the managerial vacancy from within Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, England, Portugal and Spain,” said Teer.
"Stephen comes as a young tracksuit manager whose training and coaching skills are widely recognised and who has an in-depth knowledge of football at senior and junior levels on both sides of the border.McDonnell, who was forced to retire from the game aged just 22, was appointed as Warrenpoint boss in February 2018 on a short-term deal which was made permanent as he helped the club avoid relegation and reach the Irish Cup semi-finals.
