Steenhuisen admits appointing Roman Cabanac was a 'mistake'
Speaking at The Cape Town Press Club, on Thursday, where he reflected on the DA's role in the government of national unity , Steenhuisen confirmed that he has asked Cabanac to step down from the nearly R120 000-a-month role, following public outcry over the alt-right online figure's divisive remarks.
“I have had a conversation with Mr Cabanac over the course of the last few days, and I’m happy to admit that we don’t always get it right. We never will. People make mistakes, people don’t always get it right. His controversial comments extended to his questioning of the Sharpeville massacre's historical accuracy - an act which further inflamed public outrage. When asked if he was being hypocritical by appointing Cabanac as his chief of staff after the DA had taken the ANC to court over cadre deployment, Steenhuisen denied this, clarifying that Cabanac is not a member of the DA.
Steenhuisen said that ministerial salaries are not determined by the ministers themselves, but by the Public Service Commission , despite political appointees not being classified as public servants.
