Despite playing a prominent role in your summer space blockbusters, health officials in Toronto are warning you to stay away from raccoons.
Between January and May, Toronto Public Health has heard of 88 people getting bitten or scratched by the furry city-dwellers. That translates to a 117 per cent increase in 2023, compared to the previous five-year average. Of the people bitten or scratched in 2023, more than 80 per cent were in need of a special vaccine against rabies.
“As we start to enjoy the warmer weather in Toronto, residents will be heading outdoors to enjoy parks and beautiful natural spaces in the city,” said Dr. Eileen de Villa, Toronto’s medical officer of health. “We remind everyone to avoid contact with raccoons and other wild animals to minimize exposure to rabies. Treatment is very uncomfortable and avoidable. If necessary, it’s most effective if started promptly after the exposure.
