Stay Awake, a new film directed by Jamie Sisley and starring Chrissy Metz, opened the 65th San Francisco Film Festival last week.

last week. The film follows a single mother, Michelle , and her two teenage sons, Ethan and Derek, as they navigate her prescription drug addiction.stands out for a number of reasons. It is gorgeously shot, honest and deeply personal to director Sisley. There are also no portrayals of weight stigma in the film. Metz’ character navigates medical environments and treatment facilities without experiencing discrimination based on her size. In fact, Metz’ body is not a focal point of the film at all.

“When I was looking for an actor to play Michelle the biggest qualifier I was looking for was somebody who would humanize that character. I feel like a lot of addicts are demonized. A lot of addiction movies are about the addict, and a lot of times you come away with the feeling that the addicts are making a choice to be the way that they are or are unscrupulous people. I have a really opposite experience with addicts. In my experience addicts don’t choose to be addicts. It’s a disease.
