A statue of General Philip Schuyler, who served during the Revolutionary War, has been removed from Albany City Hall in New York.
The statue has stood in front of the Albany City Hall for nearly a century and has been the subject of controversy in recent years due to Schuyler’s ownership of slaves. In 2020, Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan signed an executive order to have the statue removed amid pressure from various groups and activists.
“Scores of community members have reached out to my office requesting the removal of the statue,” she alsoThe statue will now reside in storage and may eventually be given to a museum so it can be displayed with “appropriate historical context.”
