According to Statistics Canada, there was a 27 per cent rise in the number of police-reported hate crimes in 2021.Researchers noted that much of the increase was driven by crimes targeting religion, sexual orientation and race or ethnicity.

“The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated experiences of discrimination in Canada – including hate crime – and underscored an increase in discourse around issues of systemic discrimination,” they said in a report released Wednesday. According to the data, the most heavily-targeted groups in 2021 were Black people and Jewish people .

Thirteen per cent of hate crimes in 2021 involved common assault, while another seven per cent involved major assault.
