The previous census found the metro had a 0.8% annual population growth rate.
Statistician-General Resenga Maluleke has refuted claims that the City of Johannesburg’s population is declining.
The figures from the mid-year population estimates are a projection informed by the census which is the actual count of people once every 10 years. But the City of Johannesburg is crying foul over the outcome of the 2022 census count saying it is not a true reflection of the services provided by the metro.
Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda says the number is far below the City’s municipal records of rate payers. Gwamanda estimates the population in South Africa’s economic hub at over 6 million people, including those in illegally occupied building and informal settlements. But the previous census found the metro had a 0.8% annual population growth rate following the 2022 national census, compared to the 3,2 in 2011. While mid-year population estimates are based on data accumulated from the same period, estimates the South African population at over 63 million as of this month. Statistics South Africa believes the 2022 census figures are accurate at any given point, and that the census figures would take priority over mid-year estimates.
