Two moderate earthquakes have struck Qeshm island in the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian media reports. There was no immediate report on damages or casualties. The USGS report set the larger earthquake at magnitude 6.3.

TEHRAN, Iran — At least one person died after two moderate earthquakes struck the southern Iranian province of Hormozgan, state TV reported Sunday.

Iran’s Seismological Center said that the quakes struck Qeshm island in the Strait of Hormuz in midafternoon, about 1000 kilometers south of the Iranian capital of Tehran. It said the magnitudes were 6.4 and 6.3 and the heaviest temblor struck at a depth of 18 kilometers .There was no immediate report of damages. The USGS report set the earthquakes at magnitudes of 6 and 6.3.

The report said President Ebrahim Raisi ordered his senior vice-president, Mohammad Mokhber, to visit Hormozgan province as soon as possible.The report said assessment teams had deployed to analyze the situation.
