Officials at ESDs said they've been fighting to build new fire stations in unincorporated areas of the county for more than four years.

Josiah Vannatter, his wife Brenda Perez and three of their children leave teh scene of a fire at their apartments where 34 San Antonio Fire Department units responded at 6100 Vance Jackson on Friday, Feb. 17, 2023. Vanatter said he saw smoke coming from this vents and immediately evacuated with his family in tow. He also alerted nearby neighbors and saw black smoke emanating from the roof of their apartment building.

The ESDS charged city officials with jeopardizing the public safety needs of residents in rapidly-growing areas of the county by delaying — in one instance, blocking — the construction of new fire stations.“It’s not just for the people who live there,” Pct. 1 Commissioner Rebeca Clay-Flores said of the emergency services these districts provide. “If you’re driving out Highway 90 to Uvalde or Hondo, if there’s an accident on the road, those are our EMS people who respond to those issues.

. During that time, the city denied just one request from ESD 5, which serves southwestern Bexar County. It is one of three emergency services districts within Clay-Flores’ precinct.
