Citing a study on the Pirates' and Phillies' economic impact on their cities, 2 western PA reps say taxpayers who helped build PNC Park deserve more for their money.HARRISBURG, Pa. — Studies of the economic impact that the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Philadelphia Phillies have on their respective cities have two state representatives calling for the Bucs to step up to the plate.
In the early 2000s, the Pirates received $75 million in state grant funding for the land and construction of PNC Park. Allegheny County tax funding kicked in approximately $147 million, while the Pirates’ organization contributed approximately $40 million for a total cost of $260 million. As part of its reports, the IFO reviewed the relationship between team payroll, wins and attendance. Unsurprisingly, the IFO found a positive relationship between both team payroll and wins, as well as wins and fan attendance.
Citizens Bank Park was built for $450 million, approximately half of which was publicly financed. The state contributed $85 million, and the remaining $136 million was funded through a 2% rental car tax levied by the City of Philadelphia, according to the
