Two-year-old Canadian local news startup had heady plans when founded, but now trims jobs while execs snipe at workers on Twitter

Since launching in 2021, however, the company has fallen far short of its ambitious expansion goals. With growth slowing in recent months, Overstory began cutting jobs. The deepest came in early February at Capital Daily, after the publication lost four of its employees, bringing its staff to three. The Victoria-based publication had repeatedly been held up as the company’s exemplar of an award-winning, profit-making publication.

The layoffs quickly morphed into a broader public feud, after company cofounders posted a series of tweets seen as both naive about the journalism industry and dismissive of their employees.“Not fun. News is hard,” he wrote.: “Many journalists don’t understand business. But worse? They don’t care to.” He later apologized to staff for his remarks.

The firings in early February came a day before Overstory staff announced they were unionizing, but those involved in the efforts don’t believe the events are linked. “I had never been in a newsroom before. I didn’t have much editing experience … I could not believe it was happening.”“It’s frustrating to see people who don’t know much about journalism assume that the industry is failing because of journalists, and not because of wider issues,” she said.resigned last week over allegations of editorial interference by company owners.

RBA governor appearing before two parliamentary committees will be ‘difficult’ sessionsRBA governor appearing before two parliamentary committees will be ‘difficult’ sessionsIndependent Economist Warren Hogan says the RBA Governor appearing before two parliamentary committees this week will be a “difficult session” to expand on and explain rate hikes. “They have been briefing market participants after the event ... for well over a decade, it goes back to previous governors,” Mr Hogan told Sky News Business Reporter Edward Boyd. “I think the problem here is the perceived big shift in stance, which I don’t agree they’ve shifted much, but that perception combined with the fact he didn’t do the press club lunch. “It’s going to make for obviously an even trickier week than what was always going to be a very difficult session in front of the politicians this week.”
