Health insurance companies and self-insured employers that directly pay for their workers’ medical care will now have to post data on what they pay hospitals, doctors, and other providers.

“Our plans seem to indicate they're ready to go,” Pierce said. “It’s a lot of data, so as the rollout happens they might have to make some changes, but if there are issues they will work to resolve them quickly.” So far, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has only fined two hospitals for noncompliance.Congress created the price transparency laws with the goal of making the marketplace more competitive and preventing both hospitals and insurers from charging exorbitant rates. But it will still take some time for the benefits of the law to reach the patients or even employers purchasing health plans, said Chris Skisak, executive director of the Houston Business Coalition on Health.
