Industry players say that if Starlink wants to officially launch in South Africa, it must play by all the same rules they have to.
The Internet Service Providers’ Association says it has no concerns about Starlink officially launching in South Africa, provided it complies with all the same rules its members must abide by.
However, this new rule was suspended to an undetermined future date in the wake of industry backlash. To address the regulatory hurdles that may be discouraging Starlink from launching in South Africa, the government is in discussions with SpaceX, which operates the service. In addition to Ispa, MyBroadband also asked Herotel and Wireless Access Provider’s Association executive management committee member Paul Colmer for their views on Starlink launching in South Africa.
Starlink currently only offers a reseller model for its business-to-business services, preferring to deal directly with consumers.“There should be no exclusivity with regards to distribution,” Botha stated. Colmer said Starlink was expensive compared to other forms of connectivity, both in equipment and monthly service fees, but cheap compared to existing satellite services.
