An academic at the University of Glasgow has warned that the Scottish Highlands are facing the same impact of overtourism that has led to a wave of protests in parts of Spain.
The Scottish Highlands have been compared unfavourably to the tourist hotspot of Majorca, which have been the subject of protests from locals in recent weeks. Residents there have raised concerns that mass tourism could damage local infrastructure and harm the environment.
According to the lecturer, many residents of Majorca do not "feel like they belong" any longer, as reported by Birmingham Live. He pointed to a rising cultural response to tourism, which he says to an increasing extent is being viewed "through narratives and vocabularies of colonialism, invasion, destruction, illness, malaise, and collective trauma".
Dr Colom-Montero added: "It is fascinating to see parallels with Scotland, where communities are also facing similar problems and are now beginning to find their voices against mass-tourism and its impact on their local areas," issuing a stark warning to both UK tourists and those planning staycations.
