Experts say the figures demonstrate Queensland is not doing enough to ease the pressure.

Queensland has had a higher surge of demand in its hospital emergency departments than every other state, the peak emergency medicine body has found.

That was a 30 per cent increase since 2016-17 and the highest increase of any state and territory in the same period. ED presentations per 1000 people requiring hospital admission rose 11 per cent. Bed numbers per 1000 people did not change. “One hundred per cent of Category 1 patients were seen by a clinician within two minutes of presenting to an ED for emergency care,” she said.

The Queensland government has invested heavily in hospital services but Raghwan said adding beds and staff would take time, while measures to funnel patients back to GPs instead of EDs were misplaced.“We acknowledge the government is investing a lot of money to add more beds but they will still take time to come and in the meantime the problems will continue,” she said.
