Workers at Upper Kirby Starbucks strike on Red Cup Day over personal safety concerns, union bargaining
Workers at more than 100 stores across the nation -- including ones in Austin and San Antonio -- participated in the one-day strike to demand that Starbucks open bargaining on union contracts. But the Upper Kirby store was also motivated by personal safety concerns picketers said have gone unaddressed by management.
The man continues to come to the store and threaten workers, even as recently as the morning of the strike itself, she said. Outside the Starbucks, cars and trucks honked as they passed by. The current and former Upper Kirby baristas were joined by members of other local unions and activist groups, along with Starbucks employees from other local stores looking to provide support.
