The latest episode of Screen Rant's Pitch Meeting series is revisiting a galaxy far, far away and looking back at Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Summary As the franchise's big screen future remains in flux, the latest episode of Screen Rant's own Pitch Meeting series is looking back at its Star Wars: The Force Awakens video. The seventh installment in the Lucasfilm franchise picked up 30 years after Return of the Jedi, focusing on a new group of characters along with returning icons Han Solo, Chewbacca and Princess Leia as they fight to bring down the Galactic Empire's successor, the First Order.
Nearly eight years after the movie first hit theaters, the latest episode of Screen Rant's Pitch Meeting series, seen at the top of this article, is revisiting its original Star Wars: The Force Awakens analysis. The original video poked fun at the movie's various plot conveniences that propelled the story forward, as well as borrowing the basic elements from George Lucas' franchise starter, an aspect that has been debated as both fan service, a return to form and unoriginal.
Hollywood Learned The Wrong Lesson From The Force Awakens As noted in the above Pitch Meeting, Star Wars: The Force Awakens not only kickstarted a new trilogy of movies, but also a trend in Hollywood of revisiting some of the biggest franchises with legacy sequels bringing back the original cast as older versions of their characters.
Though both franchises have scored polarizing reviews for their perceived fan service, not every legacy sequel has succumbed to these criticisms. 2018's Halloween was largely met with critical acclaim for retconning all prior sequels and giving a more meaningful exploration of Jamie Lee Curtis' Laurie Strode in the 40 years since first encountering Michael Myers.
Despite some successes, the increasingly mixed reviews the likes of the Jurassic World movies and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker received has proven that Hollywood has learned the wrong lessons from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Rather than focus on telling fresh stories within their world, as the divisive The Last Jedi and Halloween Ends did, many sequels have instead sought to rely on audience nostalgia for what came before.
