Bonita Vista High School graduate hopes to take down Texas in weekend's prestigious Jessop-Whittier Cup

Little about Azja Czajkowski’s introduction to rowing at the age of 16 pointed to a bright future in crew.

This weekend, fifth-year senior Czajkowski leads Stanford’s varsity eight to Mission Bay in hopes defeating the University of Texas in the weekend’s featured Jessop-Whittier Cup for elite collegiate women’s eights. While still in high school, Czajkowski drew interest from college coaches off he her scores on the rowing machines used for off-the-water training.

“Over COVID, while training by myself, I realized how important rowing was to me,” she said. “I really focused. I ran a lot. We had a rowing machine in the garage. I wasn’t on the water from March to December of 2020. Rowing is super intense when it comes to time. I missed it.And quite a rower. Last summer, the 5-foot-11 ½ Czajkowski was a member of the U.S. U-23 crew that won a gold medal at the Worlds.
