Speaking to a gathering on Saturday, a director of the group asserted that an eviction notice served this past week was invalid.
But TUPOC director Will Komer said St. Brigid’s owners didn’t cash the rent cheques they’d been given, something he said was a violation of Ontario’s Human Rights Code. Instead, the group obtained bank drafts to prove it had the money to pay.
St. Brigid’s is owned by four investors who bought the deconsecrated church in 2007 and converted it into an arts centre. Calls and text messages to one of the owners, Patrick McDonald, were not returned Sunday. William Komer, right, a director of The United People of Canada, spoke with a counter-protester during Saturday’s media conference.Speaking to a gathering of about 30 people, TUPOC’s Diane Nolan asserted that an eviction notice was invalid, and she said the group deserved an apology for how it had been characterized.
All three have been critical of TUPOC and its plans for an “embassy” at St. Brigid’s, with Mayor Jim Watson describing the group as “sort of kooky” in a radio interview.
