Calgary Stampede\u0027s Class of 2023 Pioneers of Rodeo Awards given to Kelly Sutherland, Jack MacDonald, Steve Dunham, Robin Burwash
In 2011, he hosted the royal couple during their visit to the Calgary Stampede. And for the event’s centennial celebration in 2012, Tervita Corp bought Kelly’s tarp for $300,000 — a record high price at the Calgary Stampede Canvas Auction.
“But I think just getting on stage in front of 25,000, 30,000 people is just unreal. The energy was incredible. And there seems to be electricity in the city, when you’re driving in there for them two weeks during the Stampede.”Article contentJack MacDonald’s parents were volunteers with the Stampede, and his father worked for the Kenway Saddle & Leather Co.
In the mid 1990s, MacDonald helped out with Doug Nelson’s documentary on chuckwagon racing called ‘Hotcakes to High Stakes’ and suggested the Northern Professional Chuckwagon Association change its name to the Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association, which ultimately happened in 1995.Article content
He was honoured with the prestigious Guy Weadick Award in 1982 for best embodying the spirit of the Calgary Stampede.
