Stampede Picks for July 15

As the Calgary Stampede starts to wind down, the 2022 Oxford Stomp will offer some Friday night nostalgia for rock fans this year.

Officially, it’s a corporate party. But it’s also one of the biggest. Held at Shaw Millennium Park, this year’s walk down memory lane will feature The Black Crowes, the Atlanta blues-rock act based around brothers Chris and Rich Robinson that became hitmakers out of the gate with their 1989 debut Shake Your Money Maker and 1992 followup The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion.

Joining them will be Canuck rockers Our Lady Peace, singer-songwriter Serena Ryder and Alberta’s Kyle McKearney. If you aren’t interested in going quite that far back, the Coca-Cola Stage on the Stampede grounds will feature Vancouver’s The New Pornographers. Led by singer-songwriter Carl Newman, the power-pop collective has included Neko Case and Dan Bejar in its ranks at various periods, and released one of the country’s all-time great debut records with 2000’s Mass Romantic. In the Morse Code of Brake Lights was released in 2019.

Oxford Stomp opens at 3 p.m. at Shaw Millennium Park. The New Pornographers play the Coca-Cola Stage at 6:30 p.m.
