The analysis by the Department of State Health Services shows that 42 percent of deaths reviewed from 2019 were pregnancy related, 88 percent of them preventable. In 2013, the last year reviewed by the agency, roughly 40 percent of deaths were pregnancy related, 89 percent of them preventable.
“The report makes clear that state leaders must do more to prevent maternal deaths and support healthy pregnancies among Texas women of all backgrounds but particularly among Black women,” said Diana Forester, Director of Health Policy for Texans Care for Children.during childbirth in Texas increased through 2020, as the rate for all other demographic groups dropped.
The expanded coverage is “particularly important given recent state legislative restrictions on access to reproductive health care,” said Dr. Carla Ortique, the committee chair. Overall, the rate of serious or life-threatening illness increased across all racial groups from 2016 to 2020, that data showed, but rose the sharpest for Black women, from 91 to 117 per 10,000 deliveries.
