While the plaintiffs hail from different regions— most of them from the US and a few from Canada and Ireland— the story they have in common is that of being stalked. AirTags, designed to help people locate lost or stolen items, have inadvertently become tools for real-time location tracking and stalking, exploiting Apple's extensive tracking network.The victims suing Apple argue that the company advertised AirTags as “stalker-proof" despite knowing about the potential misuse.
For Àine O’Neill, an Irish national living in California, the discovery of AirTags being used to monitor her every move was unsettling. She eventually gave up her budding Hollywood career and returned to Ireland, fearing the unknown stalker's identity and the level of danger she faced.The plaintiffs told Ars Technica that Apple could do more to prevent AirTags stalking, especially by raising awareness of the potential dangers posed by the misuse of their products.
