The resounding win by the progressives will leave the unpopular conservative president in a difficult situation.
Mr Yoon Suk-yeol is quite unpopular and has been dogged by scandal almost since the start of his presidency in February 2022.
Anti-incumbent resentment is a powerful driver in any election. Democracies rarely hand power to the same coalition again and again, unless there is a charismatic leader at the helm. Mr Yoon lacks that personal appeal. The result was that widespread discontent about the high cost of living – education, real estate, consumer goods – fed directly into the election, supporting a progressive economic agenda which promises greater equity.
But there may be some movement on foreign policy, impacting South Korea’s regional partners. Foreign policy is rarely a major issue in democratic elections, but it did achieve salience in this election because Mr Yoon took some controversial steps early in his tenure.
