Staff shortage closes Port McNeill emergency department Sunday until 7 p.m.

The Port McNeill Hospital’s emergency department is closed Sunday until 7 p.m. due to limited staffing availability.

Island Health announced Sunday morning that the hospital’s inpatient services will continue as usual but the emergency department would be closed from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Anyone experiencing a medical emergency in the area is encouraged to call 911 or if possible, go to the Port Hardy Hospital, roughly 40 kilometres away. “Island Health and B.C. Emergency Health Services have protocols in place to ensure patients are transported to the appropriate site,” the health authority said in an advisory.

“Island Health acknowledges this is not an ideal situation for the community and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience experienced by this temporary service reduction.” On Friday Island Health advised of restricted emergency and urgent care in Alert Bay and Chemainus, also resulting from staffing shortages.
